About us

Plant-based pet food. Hence, a vital part of.

Over the years, animals have become our best friends. We like to keep them with us as long and healthy as possible. To achieve our goal – a long and healthy life for animals and a positive impact on our planet – we use advanced techniques such as extrusion and micronisation, and sieving lucerne. Thanks to their natural composition, our extrudates not only guarantee animal health and growth, they are also testimony to our respect for nature.

Plant-based dog food, why not?

The world is changing. More and more people are adopting a vegetarian lifestyle, and research shows that dogs can also thrive on a plant-based diet. That is why at Brandenburch we are exploring the development of plant-based dog food. Naturally rich in essential nutrients such as proteins, vitamins and amino acids.

Our well thought-out and certified production process gives our customers the freedom to create and further develop their own unique products.

Our committed employees bring with them a wealth of practical knowledge, which helps us deliver not only the most nutritious, but also the finest product. At Brandenburch, we focus on more than feed alone. We also focus on a sustainable, healthy future for animals and for our planet. Together with our team and our customers, we take small steps that make a big impact.

Feed with a vision

Brandenburch is committed to corporate social responsibility. In principle, by developing innovative, plant-based animal feed. We reuse residual flows from the juice industry and process high-fibre derivatives such as soy bean meal and apple residues into high-quality nutritional products. Because we produce efficiently, we minimise waste. Almost everything is reused. The minimal residual stream is collected in biodigesters and converted into green gas. To reduce our footprint even further, we prefer to work with local ingredients and transport.

We aim to contribute to sustainability and animal and human welfare by:

  • developing and producing nutritious, plant-based animal feed;
  • reusing high-fibre by-products from the juice industry;
  • utilising high-protein derivatives;
  • converting the minimal residual streams into energy with biodigesters;
  • supporting local suppliers for ingredients and logistics;

Our team

The Brandenburch taste makers

At Brandenburch, everyone is equal; from salesperson to production manager and from administrative assistant to process operator. We are nothing without the expertise and commitment of our professionals. Our team have their feet firmly on the ground. Hierarchy? We don’t do that. Everyone has equal opportunities to develop and contribute. Just as we need our customers’ expertise to achieve the best end product, we cannot do without our professionals to deliver high-quality plant-based dry feed for animals.

Plant-based only

At Brandenburch, our core business is producing the best plant-based feed for animals. Because we care about animal welfare. And because we want to get the most out of plant-based raw materials. So we have practically no residual products; they go back into the process. A small residual flow goes to a biodigester, which converts it into green gas. So animals, humans, and the environment all benefit from our plant-based animal feed.

About extrusion

From plant-based raw material to high-quality animal feed

The extrusion process changes the structure of the raw material so that the animal’s digestive enzymes can penetrate the cells more easily. This allows the animal to digest the food better. We make complete feeds that contain everything the animal needs, or alternatively, individual components that are incorporated into another product or muesli.

History

What’s in a name

Evert Spelt – founder of Brandenburch – still wants nothing more than to make the best possible use of foodstuffs. Where does that stem from? His father had a small cattle-feed business in Maarsen, with a modern electric mill and a small factory. Father Spelt also sold pet foods at a grocery store. So it’s fair to say that making animal feed was something Evert quite literally learned at his father’s knee. He certainly has the perfect surname.

From father to son

Evert Spelt followed in his father’s footsteps in 1977, when he started the Brandenburch company, named after his great-grandfather’s farm. Evert also wanted to make the best possible use of foodstuffs. Not only because he had a big heart for animals, it was simply in his DNA.

Soda grain production.

Soon after its foundation, Brandenburch began producing soda grains. Then came the first microniser line and – together with a German agency – Brandenburch conquered the European market. A first single-screw extruder was purchased in the early 1990s. A second extruder line followed in 1994 and a third in 2000. The latter specifically for pet food snacks.

Switch to plant-based animal feed

In 2004, Evert sold his company to focus on other projects. But he returned! Due to an unfortunate concurrence of circumstances in 2017, Brandenburch as it was then would not survive. Evert Spelt moved back in and took the helm. A turnaround that has placed the focus on plant-based animal feed. Extruding, micronising and lucerne sieving
